False Alarm Prevention Tips

What is a false alarm?

  • A false burglar alarm dispatch is defined as a request to the police department when the responding officer finds no evidence of a criminal or attempted criminal offense.

 

Did you know?

  • More than 80 percent of all false alarms are caused by human error
  • There are easy steps you can take to prevent false alarms
  • False alarms are a liability, wasting taxpayer dollars and threatening the effectiveness of police, fire, and EMS departments

 

Major causes of false alarms:

  • Unlocked or loose doors and windows
  • Pets over 40lbs triggering motion sensors
  • Lack of system maintenance or improper installation of equipment
  • Failure to train those with system access, such as children, service providers, visitors

 

Before you activate your Frontpoint system:

  • Fully educate yourselves and all users on the system and alarm process
  • Make sure you securely close and lock all protected doors and windows
  • If you are leaving your home or business, make sure the door you leave by is closed tight
  • Keep pets over 40lbs and heaters away from motion sensor areas
  • Know and rehearse the process to cancel an accidental alarm 
  • Make sure you have accurate phone numbers on file
  • Know your passcode/user codes
  • Program the monitoring station's phone number in your phone

 

Know what to do if you set your alarm off accidentally:

  • Don’t panic - carefully enter your disarm code to reset your system
  • Wait for the monitoring station to call, and give them your passcode
  • Do not leave your home or business until you have talked with the monitoring station! 
  • Do not call 911 to cancel alarm activations – you must call the monitoring station

 

Avoid the following to prevent false alarms:

  • Unlocked doors or windows
  • Loose-fitting doors or windows
  • Open doors or windows. Always keep doors and windows locked when the alarm is armed to reduce the chance that friends, neighbors, or customers enter and cause the alarm to activate.
  • Pets - If you have pets over 40lbs contact customer support for additional tips to avoid accidental activation of your system
